After the age of 40, the body begins to play by a different set of rules. Workouts that felt effective at 25, such as intensive cardio sessions, long distance running or daily high intensity training, may become less beneficial and, in some cases, place unnecessary stress on the body. At the same time, new priorities emerge that may once have seemed insignificant, including maintaining bone density, preserving muscle mass, supporting hormonal balance and allowing adequate time for recovery.
This does not mean that physical activity should slow down after 40. Rather, it means that choosing the right type of exercise becomes just as important as exercising itself.
Why the rules change
From the age of 35 to 40, the body naturally begins to lose muscle mass through a process known as sarcopenia. Without targeted strength training, this gradual decline accelerates with each passing decade. At the same time, bone density begins to decrease, particularly in women after menopause, as oestrogen levels fall and its protective effect on bone tissue diminishes.
Hormonal changes also influence the body’s ability to recover from exercise. A workout that required only one day of recovery at 25 may take considerably longer at 45. Ignoring these changes and continuing to train with the same intensity without allowing sufficient recovery is one of the leading causes of injury and overtraining among active women in midlife.
What rejuvenates: strength training
Strength training is arguably the most important form of exercise after 40, yet it remains one of the most underestimated, particularly among women who have traditionally relied on cardio as their primary method of weight management.
Resistance training directly counteracts sarcopenia by stimulating muscle protein synthesis. It is also one of the most effective ways to maintain bone density, as the mechanical load placed on the skeleton stimulates osteoblasts, the cells responsible for building new bone tissue.
In addition, strength training improves insulin sensitivity, which becomes increasingly important as hormonal changes affect metabolism during midlife. It also helps preserve muscle mass, supports a healthy metabolic rate and contributes to long term physical independence.
Most specialists recommend two or three strength training sessions each week that target all major muscle groups, with gradual and progressive increases in resistance over time.
What rejuvenates: walking and zone 2 cardio
Walking remains one of the simplest yet most effective forms of physical activity after 40. A consistent walking routine has been associated with improved cardiovascular health, better sleep quality, enhanced mood and greater metabolic flexibility, all whilst carrying a very low risk of injury.
Moderate intensity cardio, often referred to as Zone 2 training, is equally beneficial. At this level of effort, you can still hold a conversation while exercising. This type of training improves mitochondrial function, strengthens cardiovascular endurance and supports metabolic health without placing excessive stress on the body.
What rejuvenates: mobility and balance
Practices such as yoga, Pilates and dedicated mobility training become increasingly valuable after 40. They help maintain joint mobility, which naturally declines with age, improve balance and coordination, and reduce the risk of injury during other forms of exercise.
Better mobility also supports everyday movement, making ordinary activities feel easier while helping preserve independence and physical confidence as the years go by.
What can wear the body down: excessive high intensity cardio
Chronic high intensity cardio, such as daily intense running without sufficient recovery, can become more challenging for the body after 40 than it was in earlier years.
Persistently elevated cortisol levels caused by excessive training and inadequate recovery may negatively affect hormonal balance, sleep quality and body composition. In some cases, increasing the volume of exercise can even contribute to unexpected weight gain rather than weight loss.
This does not mean that high intensity training should be avoided altogether. It simply means that it should be balanced with adequate recovery and should not become the only or dominant form of physical activity.
What can wear the body down: repetitive high impact exercise without preparation
Activities that involve repeated high impact loading, such as long distance running on hard surfaces or frequent jump-based workouts, may place excessive stress on the joints if the body has not first developed sufficient strength and stability.
Without a solid foundation of muscular strength, these activities may accelerate wear on cartilage, particularly in individuals who already have underlying joint problems.
Rather than avoiding these forms of exercise completely, it is far more beneficial to combine them with strength training that provides the muscles and joints with the support they need.
A principle that works at any age, especially after 40
Variety remains one of the most important principles of a sustainable exercise routine. A balanced programme that combines strength training, moderate cardiovascular exercise, mobility work and adequate recovery provides far greater long-term benefits than relying on a single type of workout, regardless of how popular or effective it may appear.
Listening to your body also becomes increasingly important. This does not mean avoiding challenges or discomfort, but learning to recognise the difference between the natural effort that accompanies progress and the warning signs that indicate the need for rest.
Physical activity after 40 is not about fighting the ageing process. It is about building a body that will continue to support you through every stage of life with strength, mobility, resilience and confidence.
